After a few weeks of riding Evolve Skateboard's new Hadean Carbon All Terrain deck, I had no doubts about its ability to go through most terrain I could throw at it. What he still regularly had doubts about was whether he could keep his feet firmly on the board at all times. The Hadean Carbon is an incredible machine capable of speeds up to 26 miles per hour, with 7-inch pneumatic tires that can handle city streets, dirt roads, and grass fields with ease. As I got used to the board, my eyes continued to widen to the places I wanted it to take me. The problem was not if the board could take me where I wanted to go, but if I would be able to follow it during the trip.
I spent my review time with a pre-production model, so it's a bit unfair to judge it largely on fit and finish details. The few weak points I did find, such as a hidden charging jack, were due to early manufacturing issues that were resolved in the shipping units. What I'm most comfortable discussing is the overall experience and feel that this particular board can provide.
I have ridden various Boosted Boards over the years, as well as electric scooters and other personal electric vehicles. Evolve's new Hadean Carbon is unlike any of them and occupies a unique place in the personal mobility space. It's not a board for everyone, especially with a retail price of $2900, but for some people it will be magic.

The First Hadean Carbon Ride
My first impression of the Hadean Carbon was its weight. There is no way around your 30 lbs. It is heavy to carry, but not impossible. The good news is that because the board can travel over many types of terrain, you don't need to lug around a lot of weight. However, it will be a bummer for people who live in an apartment above.
Setup only requires turning on the dash and its remote, each by pressing a single button. In my experience, the pairing process between the remote and the skateboard was quick. The remote control is an essential part of most electric skateboards and this is no exception. The remote features a CNC aluminum reinforced body with a miniature display to display speed, battery life, and settings. It's an impressive remote in almost all areas. The physical buttons can be customized in the settings, including the use of the deadman switch, which is located in the palm of the hand.

This board packs some serious horsepower and torque with 6000 watts of total listed power. Even for the most serious, I would recommend giving it a spin in Eco mode for the first ride. The throttle curve is much smoother on the Eco. This allowed me to control the trigger button used to go forward and the thumb button used to break. After riding for a week and almost reaching top speed, I still wasn't comfortable using the more extreme riding mode. Normally, Sport mode was sufficient for a combination of speed and control.
offroad driving
The Boosted Board was a very traditional longboard equipped with an electric motor, but the Hadean Carbon looks different. In fact, it is almost the opposite. The company told me that it focused on building the most capable ride ever and then made it feel like a skateboard after the fact.

The forged carbon fiber cover is an example of this. It is wide, stable and strong. I really liked its slight flex combined with its mostly stiff feel. It allowed me to focus on the curves and turns rather than worry about what was under my feet. Importantly, the specifications state that the skate has a weight capacity of 265 pounds, capable of accommodating a wide range of people.
The deck also has a smart lighting system below. It provides real-time hazard lights when the brake button is pressed. The color of the light at startup can also be changed for further pilot customization.

Of course, all the features are there to allow for a driving experience like no other. Once, while riding a bicycle, I spontaneously decided to take a shortcut up a bumpy dirt hill. Skate handled it without a second thought. I navigated through deep cracks but climbed over tree roots and rocks. This is something that a street council could never do. Many times I took a route through a grassy park, simply because the board was capable enough. It also cut curb corners all the time, but occasionally this was necessary to make a tight turn.
While the Haden Carbon board has a tight turning radius and can carve in a manner reminiscent of snowboarding, it does have its limitations. It is difficult to make sharp turns in the city streets. There's also no reverse mode, so getting stuck may require the board to be rotated manually. In that sense, the Hadean Carbon is not the best transportation card. But due to its long range and smooth ride, it can certainly be used to travel on straight and uncomplicated roads. The board may even be able to create its own less complicated path with the ground that it can ride.
I also tested the board's claimed ability to climb hills of 35 percent. You can certainly do that and possibly more, depending on the circumstances. In my case, I tried to go further, climbing a steep dirt slope. The board traveled about 15 feet before losing traction. It's an extreme example, but with knobby tyres, the board could have covered the entire 15 meter distance.

Often my question was whether it could handle the instant torque and fast speeds of the board. It is true that I fell once when I pulled the trigger too fast. I also crashed a second time when I braked too fast, instead of accelerating. The board can stop in an instant, so I ran out and couldn't keep my balance.
Should you buy an Evolve Hadean carbon skateboard?
The buy recommendation here is easy to give to people in the market for this type of product – go for it. The driving experience is both exciting and practical.
If you know you're looking for this type of commuter or skateboard, this is an excellent buy. It may well suit a certain type of trip, but most of all it's a lot of fun.
Likewise, it's also easy to recommend to many people to look elsewhere. This is a top of the line board that goes above and beyond what a lot of people need. The Hadean Carbon is part of a line from Evolve, which also offers its Stroke board for $1,200. The Stroke still isn't cheap, but it's easier to obtain and can provide 10 miles of range.
Even for extreme sports use, it's hard to see that the Haden Carbon All Terrain board couldn't keep up. The question is whether you need something that can cut grass, dirt, and everything else.
