asset allocation

The asset allocation analysis presented on your bank statement and client access is designed to help you understand your investments as part of a full portfolio review with your financial advisor.

How does Raymond James determine my asset allocation?

Learn more about the concept of asset allocation and how to apply it to your portfolioraymondjames.com. For packaged investment products like mutual funds, annuities, and 529s, Raymond James uses data from Morningstar (Morningstar.com) and to allocate your inventory accordingly. Morningstar data is used in conjunction with Raymond James' internal product ratings to provide an overview of your exposure to each asset class. Morningstar information is generally provided from the most recent product registrations and as such Client Access may not display real-time attributions.

Why doesn't my cash balance match the total value of the Cash & Cash Alternatives asset class?

The Cash & Cash Alternatives asset class represents cash and money market shares, as well as cash allocations contained in mutual funds and bonds. The amount of money embedded in investment products is displayed to clarify what part of the money is not available for withdrawal or investment. To view available cash balances to withdraw or invest, go to the "Cash and Cash Alternatives" section of your bank statement or to "My Accounts" > "Summary" in Customer Access.

What happens when a product uses derivatives to gain exposure to an asset class?

Some Funds use derivatives (such as options, futures or swaps) to gain exposure to an asset class. When that happens, Morningstar's "X-ray" data reports holdings as the fund submits them, and often the derivatives show as unrated. This can result in the asset allocation analysis information returned by Morningstar misrepresenting a portfolio's actual exposure to an asset class. To solve this problem, Raymond James can internally override some of Morningstar's product allocations to better reflect the product's asset allocation. Please contact your financial advisor for specific information on internal ratings.

What assets fall into the unrated asset class?

The unrated asset class represents securities currently unrated by Raymond James, categorized as “Other” by Morningstar, in mutual funds and certain pension sub-accounts that are currently “uncharted” and/or for which Morningstar data is not available are.

Which packaged products does Morningstar screen?

Morningstar X-rays the following types of products:

  • 529 college plans
  • American Depositary Receipts
  • Investment funds
  • The interest rate
  • closed funds
  • Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)
  • foreign common stock
  • open funds

How does Raymond James categorize products that are not "irradiated" by Morningstar?

  • The interest rateare only x-rayed by the Morningstar feed if they are currently "assigned". Annuities that are currently unallocated are displayed as "Unclassified". Efforts are being made to map the remaining uncharted annuities.
  • UITscurrently not screened, but allocated 100% to US equities or fixed-income securities, depending on the investment objective of the ITU.
  • Middleare screened by Morningstar, but because some products use options, swaps, futures and other derivatives to gain exposure to asset classes, the information returned by Morningstar may not reflect the product's actual asset class exposure. In some cases, Raymond James overwrites Morningstar's allocation data and allocates the product to a different asset class.

How are liabilities treated in the asset allocation view?

Liabilities such as short positions, short options and margin balances are not represented in the asset allocation pie chart. Instead, they are shown separately below the total asset value table.
