In this article you will learn how to:
- Open Product Portfolio or Portfolio Portfolio
- View tree hierarchy
- Group backlog items using the Mapping panel
- Reparent elements by dragging thechange fatheroption

Assign items to group them into a resource or epic
If you've already created your backlog and now want to organize it, you can do it more easily by assigning child items to parent items.
Choose
see optionsand selectCartography.
The Mapping panel is displayed immediately.
Find non-parent dangling items that might appear at the end of the main set of dangling items. Parents must be enabled in the display options.
To allocate resources to epics, select theCharacteristicsproblems in the problem picker. The Epic Mapping panel will appear automatically.

To assign a backlog item to a feature, you first enable mapping of its backlog (backlog items, stories, or requirements). Then locate the group of non-parent hangers by turning theCountrycontrol toshow. Non-parent to-dos will appear at the bottom of the main set of to-dos.
Drag the elements that currently have no parent to the resource they belong to. Additionally, you can drag a backlog item to a different resource to change its parent item. This mapping creates parent-child resource links to user stories, which are captured in theguide (links).
You can select multiple backlog and sprint backlog items in the same way asmultiple select items from query results.
It's the same process for allocating resources to epics. From the resource stack, drag resources to an epic listed in the mapping panel.
Change main task and reorder items
When you need to change the order or grouping, drag the item to the new location.
You can change an element's parent using the assignment panel or drag it within the hierarchy to change its parent.
You can only reallocate pending items to other resources and resources to other epics.
Also, to change the priority of an item within a group, drag the item up or down in its hierarchical group.items moved in order of priority in your backlog.
Limitations in reordering the backlog belonging to other teams
If you find that you cannot reorder a backordered item, make sure theThe information icon appears in the first column, as shown in the following image.
You can reorder items that belong to other teams, but you can't reorder items that belong to other teams. For more information, seeBacklogs, portfolios and agile project management, work with multi-team ownership of backlogs.
Change a parent of multiple pending items
From a product backlog or portfolio, you can select multiple work items and chooseChange father...to link items to a parent work item.
Add backlog levels and dashboards
If you need more than two order booklets, you can add up to two more for a total of five order book levels.
You can add them by customizing your process, adding new types of work items, and then setting up your backlogs and boards. You can also add or modify fields defined for a work item type (WIT) or add a custom WIT. For more details, seeCustomize an inheritance processmiCustomize your backlogs or dashboards (inheritance process).
You can add them by customizing your legacy process or by modifying your XML definition files. You can also add or modify fields defined for a work item type (WIT) or add a custom WIT. To learn how to do this, see the following articles based on the process template used to update your project:
Inheritance process model:
- Customize your backlogs or dashboards for a process.
- Customize an inheritance process.
Local XML Process Model:
- Customize Job Tracking
- Add portfolio issues
- Customize the local XML process template
You can add them by defining additional work item types and customizing process settings. You can also add or modify fields defined for a work item type (WIT) or add a custom WIT. For more information, seeCustomize the local XML process templatemiAdd a Portfolio Accumulation Level.
View summary progress, counts, or totals
Product and portfolio backlogs support cumulative column display. You can add one or more cumulative columns to display progress bars, descending work item counts, or totals for selected numeric fields. Your settings persist for each custom page and are only valid for your views.
progress barsindicate the percentage of children within a hierarchy that are closed or completed.accountdisplay the total number of child elements. AND,Totalsprovide a sum of numeric fields such as Effort, Story Points, Completed Work, or Remaining Work of descendant items.
For example, here are the progress bars for a portfolio buildup.
